Whenever Brands approach me, they are either with weak Brand Identity or no Brand Identity. What does this mean?

A . They have a Brand Identity created – but is poorly used in any communication of the Brand – includes digital as well as print media. This results in miscommunication with the target audience, nonalignment of the brand goals, very weak brand recall in the target market.

B. New businesses (mostly) who want to create an Identity. So we start from scratch to brainstorm and carve out a Brand Strategy with respect to design. The impact of my work is seen in the growth of such companies in their first year itself.

Let us go through how I approach any assignment. Instead of speaking at length, which may lead to yawns, let me list down key process posts which I follow

  1. Research – I spend a good amount of time researching the company and its competitors or similar industry. This helps me in benchmarking with the market
  2. Identify Target Market – I have meetings with the sales team, marketing team or the CEOs of the companies to identify and understand EXACT customer profiles. This allows to plan the content and mediums to target. This is the most crucial step to lay down the brand design strategy.
  3. Mood Boards – This the step where I sit down with blank paper to sketch and ideate new design boards keeping in mind all possible mediums to be used (print and digital). These set of mood boards helps to do pilot tests with small set of target audience and freeze on the design strategy
  4. Brand Design Guidelines – Most neglected but absolutely essential step is to create explicit guidelines for the brand. I work closely with the execution team to ensure that these guidelines are followed – so as to achieve 100 percent brand design consistency. This negates any chance of dilution in the brand perception, thereby creating brand recall and activation of the target audience (This is mixed with the marketing and sales strategies of the brand. Please note, I do not plan for sales growth and marketing spends for any brand – I may share my opinion the allocated budgets based on the association with the brand)
